Born in late 2003, the GT3 RS 996.2 is a homologation model intended to validate the 911 GT3 RSR for international GT regulations. Based on the GT3 Mk2, Porsche Motorsport added a carbon front bonnet and rear wing, carbon wing mirror shells, a polycarbonate rear window, a reinforced roll cage as standard, and deleted sound insulation. The chassis received adjustable mounting points, reinforced hubs, stiffer springs and increased camber. 682 examples were produced, exclusively in white with red or blue decals.

The engine remains the Mezger 3.6-litre naturally aspirated unit, 381 bhp at 7,400 rpm, paired with a close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox and a single-mass flywheel. Around 50 kg lighter than the GT3, it makes for a more direct, louder and more demanding car, designed for the track ahead of comfort. Never sold in North America — the roll cage replaced the side airbags — it is today the most sought-after modern RS on the collector market.
