1972 was a pivotal year for the 911: Porsche relocated the oil tank in front of the right-hand rear wheel to recentre the masses within the wheelbase, resulting in an external oil filler flap on the wing — the famous "Ölklappe". After petrol station attendants mistook it for the fuel filler, it disappeared as early as 1973: only one model year carries it. At the top of the range, the 2.4 S developed 190bhp at 6,500rpm thanks to Bosch mechanical fuel injection.

The 2.4 S Ölklappe is today one of the most sought-after classic 911s, precisely because this configuration existed for only a single model year. As the ultimate evolution of the "F" series 911 before the G-Series, it combines the purity of the original line with the most noble mechanicals of its era. Examples certified by Porsche, with documented history and restored by recognised specialists, dominate sales and rank among the safe bets of Porsche collections.
